Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) is raising the bar for its wealth management clients with the launch of its first-ever metal credit card, bringing a more exclusive tier of rewards and travel privileges to select members of its Private Wealth segment.
The BPI Signature Wealth Card is available by invitation and combines premium travel services, rewards and lifestyle privileges with a metal card design aimed at the bank’s highest-value customers.
More than another addition to BPI’s credit card portfolio, the launch reflects how banks are increasingly using premium cards to deepen relationships with affluent customers and keep more of their spending and financial activity within their ecosystems.
A card designed for BPI’s wealthiest clients
Unlike mass-market credit cards that are generally available to anyone who meets eligibility requirements, the Signature Wealth Card takes a more exclusive approach.
The card is offered only to select BPI Private Wealth clients, with interested customers directed to their respective Relationship Managers for more information.
Its metal construction also distinguishes it from BPI’s existing card lineup, making the Signature Wealth Card the bank’s first metal credit card.
For affluent customers, however, exclusivity alone may not be enough. Premium cards increasingly compete on the quality and convenience of the experiences attached to them.
Premium tavel takes center stage
Travel is a major component of the Signature Wealth Card’s proposition.
Eligible cardholders receive unlimited airport lounge access, with one guest or travel companion included. The card also provides access to airport transfers and fast-track services, potentially making the airport experience more seamless for frequent travelers.
Cardholders can also access a 24/7 Visa Concierge, which can assist with travel, dining, shopping and other requests.
These benefits position the card less as a simple payment tool and more as a service layer for customers who place a premium on convenience.
Rewards that extend beyond the Philippines
The card also earns 2 BPI Rewards Points for every ₱20 spent, both locally and internationally.
Its foreign transaction fee is set at 1.5%, giving cardholders a way to use the card overseas while earning rewards from international spending.
For frequent travelers and customers with significant spending, the combination of international acceptance, rewards and travel privileges can make the card particularly relevant.
However, the value of the rewards ultimately depends on how cardholders use and redeem their points, especially when compared with other premium cards competing for affluent consumers.
Lifetime anual fee waiver adds another advantage
One of the card’s notable features is its annual fee structure.
The principal cardholder receives a lifetime waiver of the annual membership fee, while up to six supplementary cards can also be issued without an annual membership fee.
That removes one of the recurring costs often associated with premium credit cards and could make the offering more attractive to families who want to consolidate spending across multiple cards.
The ability to extend the benefit to supplementary cardholders also reinforces the product’s positioning as a broader wealth-management perk rather than a card designed solely for individual spending.
Beyond airport lounges and rewards
The Signature Wealth Card also comes with access to exclusive private sales, member-only experiences and bespoke offers.
These perks point to a broader shift in premium banking, where affluent customers are not necessarily being targeted through financial products alone.
Instead, banks are increasingly competing through access.
Private events, curated experiences, concierge services and exclusive offers can give wealth clients reasons to remain within a bank’s ecosystem even when competing institutions may offer similar interest rates, investment products or credit facilities.
The premium card race gets more competitive
BPI’s entry into the metal card segment comes as premium credit cards become increasingly differentiated by experiences rather than basic transaction features.
For affluent customers, the appeal can come from a combination of convenience, recognition, travel benefits and personalized services.
The Signature Wealth Card places BPI in that increasingly competitive space while tying the product directly to its Private Wealth business.
For BPI, the strategy is straightforward: give high-value customers more reasons to put their spending, travel and lifestyle needs within the bank’s ecosystem.
For consumers who receive an invitation, the bigger question will be whether the card’s combination of lifetime fee waivers, travel privileges, rewards and exclusive experiences delivers enough value to justify making it a primary premium card.
For now, the Signature Wealth Card remains firmly positioned as an exclusive product, available only to select BPI clients through invitation.
