Artificial intelligence is no longer restricted to corporate boardrooms and tech enterprises—it has quietly found a home in Philippine neighborhood sari-sari stores.

According to the latest data from Filipino tech startup Packworks, micro-retailers utilizing AI-powered inventory tools recorded a 79 percent surge in median sales for top-selling items within just two months of adoption.

The report analyzed over one million monthly transactions across Packworks’ network of 300,000 micro-retailers.

Through Packworks’ Store Insighting Project (SIP), optimizing the stock levels of high-demand consumer goods drove median gross merchandise value (GMV) sales from ₱187,229 to ₱335,818 per store. Overall, stores leveraging the data recorded a 29 percent increase in median total sales and a 20 percent increase in total transaction volume.

Dinagdagan ko ang pag-order ng mga top 10 product na nasa SIP document,” shared Elizabeth Veluz, a sari-sari store owner from Camarines Sur.

The benefits were particularly evident during shifting weather and purchasing cycles, with stores seeing a 47 percent increase in median GMV sales for seasonal products by anticipating demand during rainy days and weekends.

“Nakikita rito ang mabebentang produkto, kaya makakapag-stock kami nang marami at maiiwasan ang ‘out of stock,'” added Lucia Bongot, a store owner from Cavite.

Developed through the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD) Startup Grant Fund Program awarded in 2024, the SIP platform converts raw transaction logs into simplified, actionable daily reports.

Created in partnership with ST Telemedia Global Data Centres (Philippines) and Ateneo’s Business Insights Laboratory for Development (BUILD), the tool also helps owners clear slower-moving items. By actively pushing these identified products, store owners increased their median GMV on slow-moving inventory by 96 percent.

“Our findings show that when data is democratized, we give grassroots entrepreneurs the power to chart their own growth,” said Andoy Montiel, Chief Data Officer at Packworks.

“By equipping sari-sari store owners with the insights to stock smarter and operate efficiently, we are not only boosting individual store sales but expanding access to technology to build a more resilient grassroots economy,” he added.

Inclusive tech and the future of micro-retail

The initiative’s global impact was recognized in May 2026, when Packworks’ collaboration with Connected Women won the Activate AI Challenge — a global initiative led by data.org and supported by Zoom.

Selected as one of six awardees out of 500 applicants worldwide, and the sole winner from ASEAN, the initiative underscores how AI can expand economic access without displacing workers.

“Sari-sari stores remain the economic lifeblood of our communities, and women serve as the backbone of this ecosystem,” said Ibba Bernardo, Co-Founder of Packworks.

“True innovation must be inclusive, especially with AI. With the help of ecosystem partners such as Connected Women who ensure that there is a human-in-the-loop, Packworks strives to deliver accessible, equitable digital tools directly into the hands of our saripreneurs, to further unlock the full potential of grassroots retail while nurturing these communities for sustainability and scale,” he further stated.

As micro-retailers move from intuitive guessing to data-backed inventory planning, the widespread adoption of AI aligns directly with the Philippine Development Plan 2023–2028.

Looking ahead, the digital transformation of sari-sari stores is poised to turn traditional corner shops into resilient, tech-enabled hubs — proving that grassroots entrepreneurship will remain at the forefront of the country’s modernizing supply chain.
