Google bets on creators, AI, and commerce as YouTube evolves into a full-funnel marketing platform

Google is positioning YouTube as more than a video-sharing platform, arguing that the combination of trusted creators, artificial intelligence (AI), connected television, and integrated shopping features is helping brands generate stronger returns on their marketing investments.

Speaking during the YouTube Works Awards Philippines 2026, Google executives outlined the company’s broader vision for YouTube as a platform that guides consumers from content discovery to purchase while delivering measurable business results for advertisers.

While the awards recognized the country’s most effective advertising campaigns, Google used the event to showcase how creator partnerships, AI-powered advertising, and commerce tools are reshaping digital marketing in the Philippines.

“From shorts and long-form videos to living-room TV content, podcasts, and online shopping, YouTube has built a complete ecosystem that connects with millions of Filipinos every single day across every screen and format,” said Prep Palacios, Country Manager of Google Philippines.

“But our true differentiator is trust. When eight out of 10 local viewers trust product recommendations from YouTube creators, watching turns into ‘sulit’ or wise purchase decisions on our platform. By supercharging this authentic creator influence with our scale and Google AI capabilities, YouTube provides a high-value space where brands can thrive and deliver higher ROI.”

Creator trust becomes YouTube’s competitive edge

As competition for advertising budgets intensifies, Google is betting that creator credibility has become one of YouTube’s strongest competitive advantages.

According to a Google and Kantar study cited during the event, 81% of surveyed Filipino viewers consider YouTube creators trustworthy sources of information about products and brands they want to purchase.

The research also highlights YouTube’s growing influence throughout the consumer purchase journey. Among respondents, 95% said they watch instructional videos before making purchases, 89% watch unboxing videos, and 87%rely on product reviews when evaluating products.

Google said these viewing habits have transformed YouTube from primarily an entertainment platform into an important destination for product discovery and purchase decisions.

The platform’s audience is also expanding beyond mobile devices.

More than 19 million Filipinos now watch YouTube on connected television sets, while uploads of YouTube Shorts by Filipino creators grew by more than 90% year on year as of April 2026, reflecting increasing creator activity across multiple video formats.

AI helps brands find the right creators

To capitalize on the growing influence of creators, Google has rolled out YouTube Creator Partnerships in the Philippines.

The platform enables advertisers to discover creators through Google Ads and Display & Video 360 using AI-powered search tools that organize creators by keywords, audience demographics, content categories, and emerging trends.

Brands can evaluate audience insights and engagement metrics before initiating collaborations, making it easier to identify creators whose audiences align with their marketing objectives.

Once partnerships are established, advertisers can amplify creator content using Creator Partnerships Boost, formerly known as Partnership Ads, while tracking campaign performance through Google’s advertising tools.

Google said the objective is to extend the reach of creator-led campaigns beyond a creator’s existing audience without sacrificing the authenticity that makes influencer marketing effective.

Commerce moves closer to content

Google is also integrating commerce capabilities more deeply into YouTube’s viewing experience.

Through the YouTube Shopping affiliate program, eligible creators can tag products featured in their videos, allowing viewers to purchase items directly while creators receive commissions from completed sales.

Meanwhile, brands operating official stores on Shopee and Lazada can connect YouTube advertising campaigns directly to marketplace checkout pages through Google’s Commerce Media Suite.

The company said the platform uses shopping signals — including search activity and products added to shopping carts — to help advertisers reach consumers who are already demonstrating purchase intent.

By linking creator recommendations, product discovery, and online transactions, Google aims to shorten the path from inspiration to purchase.

AI connects audiences with relevant content

Artificial intelligence also plays an increasingly central role across YouTube’s advertising ecosystem.

Google said its Gemini AI capabilities help interpret viewer intent and match users with relevant creators, advertisements, products, and content recommendations.

Rather than relying solely on audience demographics, Google’s AI analyzes multiple signals to improve campaign targeting and help advertisers deliver more relevant messages throughout the customer journey.

The company said these capabilities are intended to improve campaign efficiency while allowing marketers to scale personalized advertising across YouTube’s expanding ecosystem.

Google cites stronger returns than traditional TV

To reinforce YouTube’s business case, Google pointed to research suggesting the platform continues to outperform traditional television advertising.

A commissioned Analytic Edge meta-analysis covering 21 Philippine consumer packaged goods marketing mix studies conducted between 2021 and 2025 found that YouTube generated twice the return on investment of linear television.

Google said the findings support its strategy of positioning YouTube as a platform capable of delivering both brand-building and measurable business performance.

The campaigns recognized during this year’s YouTube Works Awards — including GCash’s Best of Philippines winner — illustrate how advertisers are increasingly combining creative storytelling, first-party customer data, AI-powered media buying, and multiple video formats to drive measurable business outcomes.

As marketers face growing pressure to justify advertising spending, Google is betting that YouTube’s combination of trusted creators, commerce integrations, and AI-powered campaign optimization will become an increasingly important part of brands’ digital marketing strategies.
