For many Filipinos, getting their first credit card is already a milestone. Atome Philippines is now betting that their first insurance policy can be just as accessible.

The digital finance platform has partnered with Chubb Philippines to launch Atome Card Shield, an embedded insurance product that combines online shopping protection with personal accident coverage for ₱62 a month.

Available exclusively through the Atome app, the plan is designed for the platform’s more than 3 million cardholdersin the Philippines.

According to Atome, around 80% of its cardholders are first-time credit card users, many of whom use the card for everyday spending, including groceries, transport and utility bills.

The move marks Atome’s latest step beyond buy now, pay later (BNPL), adding insurance to a portfolio that already includes credit cards, lending and savings products.

Rather than offering a traditional insurance product, Atome Card Shield focuses on risks that consumers are more likely to encounter while shopping and paying online.

The plan covers purchases that fail to arrive, differ from the seller’s description, or are accidentally damaged or stolen within 30 days of purchase. It also provides protection against fraudulent online merchants and unauthorized transactions made using an Atome Card.

Cardholders are likewise covered by personal accident insurance of up to ₱150,000 for accidental death — including motorcycle-related accidents — and permanent disability.

Eligible users aged 18 to 75 with good credit standing can activate the coverage directly through the Atome app.

The Philippine launch is the latest outcome of Atome and Chubb’s regional partnership, which began in 2024 to develop insurance products tailored for Southeast Asian consumers.

For Chubb Philippines, the partnership is aimed at making insurance easier to access for Filipinos who have traditionally been underserved by the industry.

“Insurance has too often been out of reach for the everyday Filipino — whether because of cost, complexity, or simply not knowing where to start,” said Mari Rachelle Canta, Country President of Chubb Philippines.

She said the company hopes the partnership will help narrow the country’s insurance protection gap by offering affordable coverage that customers can purchase and manage digitally.

Atome also sees the product as an opportunity to introduce insurance to customers who may be buying coverage for the first time.

“Offering meaningful protection with shopping coverage and personal accident benefits at just ₱62 per month demonstrates how we can support greater financial inclusion through responsible and innovative financial solutions,” said Christian Quiros, President and Country General Manager of Atome Philippines.

Embedded insurance gains momentum

The launch reflects a broader shift in digital finance, where platforms are moving beyond payments and lending to offer complementary financial services within a single app.

Embedded insurance has been gaining traction across Southeast Asia as fintech companies look for ways to make protection products easier to purchase by integrating them into services consumers already use.

For users, it removes many of the traditional barriers associated with buying insurance, while giving providers another way to deepen customer engagement.

As digital financial services continue to evolve, insurance is increasingly becoming part of the everyday financial experience rather than a product consumers purchase only when they need it.
