MEXC crypto app becomes unavailable on Google Play in the Philippines

MEXC has become unavailable for new downloads through Google Play in the Philippines, adding another layer of restriction around offshore cryptocurrency platforms serving Filipino users.

In an August 19 announcement, the global crypto exchange said its Android app is temporarily unavailable in the country due to recent changes in Google Play’s app-listing policies.

MEXC said it is reviewing the adjustments needed to comply with local regulatory requirements. The exchange maintained that existing customer accounts and assets are unaffected by the app’s removal from Google Play.

Google Play now ties crypto listings to Philippine licensing

The development comes as Google applies country-specific requirements to cryptocurrency exchanges distributed through its app marketplace.

Under Google Play’s policy for cryptocurrency exchanges and software wallets, crypto exchange developers targeting users in the Philippines must have the required authority from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP). Google also requires apps to comply with other applicable local laws and licensing requirements.

MEXC does not appear on the BSP’s latest published list of registered Virtual Asset Service Providers, which includes locally authorized providers such as Coins.ph, PDAX, Maya Philippines, GoTyme Bank, and UnionBank.

The BSP has also tightened its position on offshore platforms. In Memorandum No. M-2026-003, the central bank said direct access by Philippine retail customers to offshore VASPs is not allowed unless the provider is registered with the BSP or Securities and Exchange Commission.

App-store access becomes another regulatory pressure point

MEXC’s disappearance from Google Play follows an earlier reduction in mobile access to offshore crypto platforms.

In April, MEXC was among several international exchanges that became unavailable through Apple’s Philippine App Store, alongside platforms including Binance, Bitget, and OKX.

The latest development suggests that enforcement of Philippine crypto rules is increasingly affecting not only websites but also the distribution channels users rely on to install financial apps.

For Filipino users, however, the Google Play restriction should not be interpreted as meaning that funds held on MEXC have automatically been frozen or lost. MEXC said accounts and assets remain accessible and that it continues to provide other means of accessing its service.

Users should nevertheless exercise caution with any alternative app installation method. Downloading cryptocurrency applications from unofficial websites or third-party APK sources can expose users to fraudulent applications, malware, and credential theft.

The broader issue is becoming clearer: offshore crypto exchanges may find it increasingly difficult to reach Philippine users through mainstream digital channels without satisfying local licensing requirements.
