Globe taps AI firewall to protect international voice calls

Globe is strengthening the security of international calls entering its network with an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered voice firewall designed to detect potentially fraudulent traffic in real time.

The Philippine telecommunications company has partnered with e& Carrier & Wholesale Services, the international wholesale arm of UAE-based technology group e&, to manage Globe’s international voice traffic.

Under the agreement, e& will become Globe’s preferred international voice partner, providing overseas telecommunications operators with a gateway for routing calls to the Globe network.

The service will use AI-enabled fraud prevention, real-time traffic monitoring, advanced analytics, and SIM-box detection to identify suspicious activity across international voice routes.

Rather than analyzing what callers say, the technology operates at the network level by examining traffic patterns and how calls are routed.

AI looks for suspicious calling patterns

Voice fraud does not always begin with the content of a conversation. It can also involve unusual call volumes, unauthorized routing, manipulated caller information, and devices used to disguise international calls as local traffic.

SIM boxes, for example, can contain multiple SIM cards and route overseas calls through local mobile connections. This allows fraudsters to bypass legitimate international routes, conceal where calls originated, or support large-scale fraudulent activity.

An AI-powered firewall can analyze network data as calls enter Globe’s system and identify patterns that differ from normal traffic. Real-time monitoring enables suspicious routes or activity to be detected more quickly than systems that rely primarily on fixed rules.

The partnership will also give international carrier partners greater visibility into their traffic and access to intelligent routing through e&’s global network.

“This agreement brings together Globe’s market reach with our international voice network, routing expertise and security capabilities,” e& Group Chief Carrier and Wholesale Officer Nabil Baccouche said.

That distinction matters for customers concerned about privacy.

The announcement does not indicate that the firewall transcribes conversations, recognizes suspicious language, alerts customers during calls, or determines whether a voice was AI-generated. Nor does it describe any consumer-facing alert when Globe suspects a scam call.

Instead, its primary role is to protect the infrastructure carrying international calls by detecting potentially fraudulent traffic and unauthorized routing.

This makes the system complementary to, rather than a replacement for, security controls used by banks and e-wallets. A telecommunications network may detect suspicious call traffic, while a financial institution separately monitors logins, account changes, and transactions resulting from social-engineering attempts.

Globe Chief Commercial Officer Darius Delgado said the partnership would help the company strengthen fraud protection and improve the quality and reliability of its international voice services.

The development comes as banks, e-wallets, and telecommunications providers increasingly coordinate efforts to combat scams that often begin with fraudulent phone calls before moving to fake websites, phishing links, or unauthorized fund transfers. Strengthening security at the telecommunications level could help disrupt these attacks earlier in the fraud chain.

As fraudsters increasingly use calls to impersonate banks, government agencies, delivery companies, and even family members, network-level detection gives telecommunications providers another opportunity to intervene before suspicious traffic reaches customers.

Even with network-level protection, customers remain responsible for verifying requests to disclose personal information or transfer funds, since a technically legitimate call route does not necessarily mean the caller is trustworthy.
