Metropolitan Bank & Trust Co. (Metrobank) is celebrating its 64th anniversary this September, highlighting a robust balance sheet and continued investments in digital banking capabilities to support evolving consumer and corporate financial needs in the Philippines.

Established in Binondo in 1962, the country’s second-largest private universal bank enters its 64th year backed by strong financial buffers, posting ₱24.9 billion in net income and reaching ₱3.9 trillion in consolidated assets in the first half of 2026.

The bank’s digital transformation strategy has increasingly focused on expanding self-service retail banking options, allowing customers to open eSavings accounts, access Online Time Deposits, and trade Unit Investment Trust Funds (UITFs) as well as government securities directly through Metrobank’s digital channels.

Balancing digital expansion with risk management

As digital banking adoption accelerates across the archipelago, financial institutions are under pressure to balance rapid product rollouts with heightened risk management and cybersecurity protocols.

“Over the past 64 years, we have seen our customers navigate many periods of change and uncertainty. Today is no different,” said Metrobank President Fabian Dee. “There are challenges ahead that we have to be prepared for, but Metrobank enters this environment with discipline, well-supported by our capital, liquidity, and risk buffers to help us navigate uncertainty and continue supporting our customers.”

In response to growing digital risks, Metrobank has bolstered its platform safeguards to give users greater account-level security controls.

Simultaneously, the bank is leveraging content-driven channels—such as its Earnest financial literacy hub and the Moneygurado docuseries — to educate users on digital fraud prevention, personal financial management, and safe investment practices.

Institutional stability and digital strategy

Metrobank’s focus on digital infrastructure and operational sustainability earned it recognition as The Asian Banker’s Strongest Bank in the Philippines for five consecutive years (2021–2025), alongside being named Best Managed Bank for 2025.

Beyond retail digital channels, the bank continues to leverage its balance sheet strength to scale its corporate offerings — combining digital cash management solutions, customized trade financing, and investment management for institutional clients navigating changing market conditions.

As legacy banks and fintech platforms increasingly converge in the Philippine financial ecosystem, Metrobank’s strategic focus remains centered on pairing balance sheet liquidity with modern digital delivery, positioning the institution to scale its operations while safeguarding consumer trust.
