Vertiv expands high-density UPS lineup for AI data center workloads in Asia-Pacific

Vertiv has expanded its uninterruptible power supply (UPS) lineup across Southeast Asia, Australia, and New Zealand to target the steep power demands of artificial intelligence workloads.

The company introduced a 1.8-megawatt model within its Vertiv PowerUPS 9000 family, extending a platform that previously capped out between 250 kW and 1250 kW. The larger unit delivers higher power capacity without requiring a larger physical footprint.

The rollout focuses on the electrical instability caused by high-density AI clusters. Graphics processing units (GPUs) often surge from low activity to peak power draw in milliseconds, creating severe load spikes that strain transformers, generators, switchgear, and backup batteries.

To stabilize these rapid shifts, the system relies on dedicated power management features:

  • Battery Shield: Limits unnecessary battery cycling during sudden load swings to reduce hardware wear.
  • Input Power Smoothing: Evenly distributes incoming power flow to shield upstream utility gear from sharp surges.
  • Dynamic State-of-Charge Management: Preserves reserve capacity for emergency outages while maintaining grid stability during routine processing spikes.

“Traditional UPS systems were not designed for the rapid and repetitive load transitions created by modern GPU environments,” said Arunangshu Chattopadhyay, director of AC power and power distribution at Vertiv Asia. “The latest expansion incorporates patented technologies that help stabilize power behavior during extreme load fluctuations while preserving battery health.”

Validation and regional distribution

Vertiv tested the control system against extreme load variations using an internal AI simulator to verify input current stability. The company also collaborated with STT Singapore on field testing to evaluate how the unit coordinates with energy storage systems under live operational conditions.

“AI is fundamentally changing data center infrastructure requirements across Asia, driving demand for higher-density power systems that can respond faster,” said Tony Gaunt, vice president for product management at Vertiv Asia.

The Vertiv PowerUPS 9000 1.8MW model is now commercially available across Southeast Asia, Australia, and New Zealand.
