GCash card linking is set to launch this August, allowing users to connect eligible Visa and Mastercard credit or debit cards directly to the GCash app for QR code payments without first topping up their wallet balance.

The new feature enables users to pay participating QR merchants using their linked bank cards while continuing to transact through the GCash app, giving consumers greater flexibility in choosing their preferred payment method.

Pay QR Merchants Without Cashing In

With GCash Link-and-Pay, users can add up to three eligible Visa or Mastercard cards as funding sources inside the app. Instead of drawing funds from their GCash wallet, payments will be charged directly to the selected linked card whenever they scan a participating merchant’s QR code.

The feature eliminates the need to manually transfer money into a GCash wallet before making purchases, offering added convenience for consumers who prefer using their debit or credit cards for everyday spending.

Users will also be able to choose a default payment card, manage linked cards, or remove them through the app as needed.

Biometric Authentication Enhances Security

Transactions made through GCash Link-and-Pay will be protected by Visa Payment Passkey, which uses biometric authentication based on FIDO standards. Instead of relying solely on SMS one-time passwords (OTPs), eligible transactions can be verified using a fingerprint, facial recognition, or the device PIN. Visa says this approach strengthens security while helping reduce fraud associated with traditional OTP-based authentication.

The rollout also reflects the industry’s broader shift toward passwordless and biometric authentication as digital payment adoption continues to grow.

Expanding Digital Payment Choices

The upcoming feature builds on GCash’s efforts to broaden payment options beyond wallet balances. Earlier this year, the company partnered with Visa to strengthen cross-border wallet funding capabilities, enabling overseas Visa cardholders to fund GCash wallets more seamlessly.

For merchants, card-linked QR payments could encourage more cashless transactions without requiring additional payment terminals, while consumers gain greater flexibility in choosing how they pay.

As QR payments continue gaining traction across the Philippines, GCash Link-and-Pay could further bridge the gap between traditional card payments and the country’s rapidly expanding digital wallet ecosystem, making cashless transactions more convenient for both shoppers and businesses.
