KasKasan Buddies has been named a founding partner of CIBI U, a new initiative aimed at helping Filipinos understand credit scores, credit reports and responsible borrowing as access to loans and other credit products continues to expand.

KasKasan Buddies is stepping further into financial education after being named one of the founding partners of CIBI U, a new credit education initiative launched August 18 at CIBI iMPACT 2026 in Makati City.

The initiative, launched under the theme “Securing Trust in an Uncertain World,” carries the tagline “Aware today. Smarter tomorrow.” It brings together KasKasan Buddies, Digital Pinoys, FinTech Alliance PH, the Credit Card Association of the Philippines (CCAP), and the Credit Information Corporation (CIC) as founding partners.

At its core, CIBI U aims to address a relatively simple problem: more Filipinos can access credit, but many may not fully understand how their borrowing behavior affects their credit standing.

That gap is becoming more important as banks, credit card companies and fintech platforms make borrowing increasingly accessible.

Credit is growing. Understanding it may not be.

CIBI data showed an increase in small-value lending between 2023 and 2025, pointing to broader use of credit among Filipinos.

But access does not necessarily translate into understanding.

Only 2% of Filipinos surveyed in the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas‘ 2021 Financial Inclusion Survey answered all of the basic financial literacy questions correctly, highlighting the wider challenge facing efforts to bring more people into the formal financial system.

For consumers, that can make seemingly straightforward questions surprisingly difficult.

What does a credit score actually mean? What information appears on a credit report? Why can a loan application be rejected even when a borrower has income? And how does repeatedly missing payments affect future access to credit?

CIBI U is designed to provide practical answers to those questions, with a focus on helping consumers understand how credit works rather than simply encouraging them to borrow.

Where KasKasan Buddies fits in

For KasKasan Buddies, the partnership extends its existing role as a financial education platform whose community regularly asks about credit cards, loans, debt and everyday money decisions.

The company said the partnership will give KKBuddies access to more credible, credit-focused information and allow questions from its community to form part of a broader, CIBI-backed financial education effort.

That could be particularly useful as credit increasingly moves beyond traditional bank channels.

Fintech platforms and digital financial services have made it easier for consumers to access financial products, but the convenience of applying for credit can also make it easier to overlook the longer-term consequences of borrowing.

The commercial opportunity is therefore significant.

For banks, lenders, credit card issuers and fintech companies, a population that understands credit is potentially a healthier customer base — one that is better positioned to use formal financial products and build a positive credit history.

For consumers, better credit knowledge could eventually mean fewer surprises when applying for loans, cards or other financial services.

The risk is not simply taking on too much debt

The challenge, however, goes beyond responsible borrowing.

As credit becomes easier to obtain, consumers may encounter more financial products, more lending channels and more sophisticated marketing before they fully understand the cost and consequences of borrowing.

Financial education can help close that gap, but it will not eliminate the underlying risks of over-indebtedness.

There is also a broader issue around credit information itself. As more Filipinos enter the formal credit system, understanding how credit data is collected, reported and used will become increasingly important.

For CIBI U to have a lasting impact, therefore, education will need to go beyond explaining what a credit score is. Consumers will need practical guidance they can apply when comparing loans, managing repayments and checking their credit information.

What comes next

CIBI U’s next challenge will be turning the initiative from a launch into an ongoing education platform that reaches consumers where they actually make financial decisions.

That creates room for its founding partners to bring credit education into their respective communities, including through digital content, financial literacy programmes and consumer-focused discussions.

For KasKasan Buddies, the partnership also strengthens its push to work with financial institutions, regulators and industry organizations to give its community more credible and actionable information about money.

As borrowing becomes more accessible, the question for the Philippine financial sector is no longer simply whether more Filipinos can get credit.

It is whether they understand the credit they are getting — and what it means for their financial future.
