From Transactions to Relationships: Why Customer Loyalty in Philippine Banking Is the Real Moat

The digitally active Filipino no longer has a bank. They have a stack — one app for receiving money, another for savings, a third for daily spending, as any guide to the best digital banks in the Philippines now assumes.

Almost nobody is losing customers outright. Everybody is losing primacy.

Rates rent a customer. They don’t keep one.

The rate war between RCBC, UnionDigital, Tonik and Maya is real and expensive. GoTyme sits near 5% p.a., while Tonik — once as high as 6% — has normalised to around 4% by mid-2026. Maya’s headline figure runs higher, but it is tiered and conditional on how actively you use the Maya ecosystem.

Note the asterisk, because it’s the whole thesis. The rate is the hook. The ecosystem condition is the relationship.

Depth is what compounds

Maya reached full-year profitability within two and a half years of launch, closing 2025 with roughly ₱68 billion in deposits and 10.7 million bank customers, and taking the only Philippine slot in the top 20 of The Asian Banker’s World’s Top 100 Digital Banks 2026.

That did not come from a number on a landing page. It came from being a wallet, a bank, and a merchant platform at once — enough surface area that leaving costs something.

What relationship-led banks actually do

Three moves separate them. They onboard in under five minutes. They personalise rewards to real behaviour rather than blanket cashback. And they anticipate — surfacing the loan, the reminder, or the rate change before the customer thinks to look. That personalisation layer runs on the same infrastructure driving AI adoption across Philippine banking.

This is where customer loyalty in Philippine banking stops being a marketing line and becomes an operating model.

The compounding asset

Acquisition costs are paid once and rise every year. Customer loyalty in Philippine banking pays back quietly and repeatedly: more products per customer, cheaper deposits, referrals that cost nothing.

The banks winning the next decade won’t be the ones with the loudest rate. They’ll be the ones customers stop comparing.
