The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) joined the celebration of the 34th National Statistics Month (NSM) last October by conducting an online public information campaign on the economic, monetary, and financial statistics it produces regularly.

With the theme “Accelerating Progress: Promoting Data and Statistics for Healthy Philippines,” this year’s National Statistics Month emphasized the importance of data as well as statistics in enhancing health outcomes.

“We are leveraging advancements in technology and analytics to develop better and better economic indicators.  Our plans are only as good as the information upon which they are based,” BSP Governor Eli M. Remolona, Jr. said in a press statement.

At the closing ceremony for NSM last October 27 at the BSP Head Office in Manila, the BSP chief also underscored the importance of accurate, timely, and relevant statistics in fostering economic growth.

Resource persons from the BSP’s Department of Economic Statistics discussed “A New Measure on Property Prices in the Philippines,” the “Development of a Labor Market Intelligence System using Big Data,” and an “Overview of the Balance of Payments Statistics: Trade in Services.”

Meanwhile, speakers from the BSP’s Department of Supervisory Analytics discussed the “Use of Visualization Tool for Analytics (VisTA): Financial Industry Surveillance.”

National Statistician Claire Dennis S. Mapa of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) gave the closing remarks at the NSM celebration.

Spearheaded by the Philippine Statistics Authority, the annual NSM celebration aims to promote the importance of statistics and to upgrade the quality and standards of statistics in the country.

The Philippines celebrates NSM every October under Presidential Proclamation No. 647, dated September 20, 1990.

The said proclamation aims to promote, enhance, and instill nationwide awareness and appreciation of the importance and value of statistics to the different sectors of society; and to elicit the cooperation and support of the general public in upgrading the quality and standards of statistics in the country.
