The Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) has rolled out a redesigned Debit Mastercard made from 100% recycled, PVC-free plastic, reinforcing the bank’s push toward more sustainable and accessible banking products.

The new card departs from the traditional horizontal format with a vertical layout and a curved notch at the bottom-left corner, a tactile feature designed to help clients quickly identify the card by touch.

The Ayala-led bank said the redesign aims to combine environmental responsibility with improved usability for everyday transactions.

“Reimagining the BPI Debit Mastercard to become an eco-friendly card is a testament to the bank’s commitment to its values of sustainability and innovation,” said Jenny Lacerna, head of BPI’s mass retail banking, in a statement.

“By using sustainable materials for our card, we hope to make sustainable behavior the default option for everyone,” she added.

How clients can get the new card

Account holders can request the eco-friendly debit card through the bank’s mobile app or via BPI Online by navigating to More > Card Management > New debit card or Debit card replacement. Clients may also visit any branches of the bank to apply in person.

For new requests or for those switching to the new design, a P200 fee applies. The card is free for clients opening new accounts at branches and for those whose existing cards are nearing expiry or due for renewal.

Once approved, the card can be picked up at the chosen branch within two to six banking days.

BPI reminded customers that those replacing an existing debit card must first permanently block their old card under Card Control in the app before submitting a replacement request.

Built for digital-first users

Beyond its eco-friendly materials, the new Debit Mastercard is positioned for digital-first customers, with the bank highlighting enhanced security features and reliability for both in-store and online transactions.

The launch comes as the Ayala-led lender continues to scale its retail banking footprint.

The bank currently serves more than 8.2 million debit cardholders nationwide and reported a 7.4% rise in net income in 2025, driven largely by double-digit growth in net interest income despite higher provisions and operating expenses.

With the introduction of its recycled, PVC-free debit card, the bank joins a growing number of financial institutions globally that are now redesigning everyday payment tools to support sustainability goals — without changing how customers bank day to day.
