Metrobank has removed the maintaining balance requirement for its eSavings account, lowering one of the most common barriers for Filipinos looking to start and sustain a savings habit in a challenging economic environment.

The move allows accountholders to keep their digital savings accounts active even when balances fall below previous thresholds, giving customers more flexibility to manage day-to-day financial pressures without risking penalties or account restrictions.

The update comes as many Filipinos continue to feel the impact of rising living costs, with financial institutions increasingly redesigning digital products to prioritize accessibility and habit-building over rigid account conditions.

“We are continuously developing our products to adapt to customers’ needs. Removing the maintaining balance requirement gives them more flexibility to manage their money, especially at a time when everyday expenses continue to rise,” said Ramon Del Rosario, Consumer Banking Sector Head of Metrobank.

He added that the change supports customers in maintaining active accounts while still building savings “at their own pace,” especially during months when expenses take priority over setting money aside.

The eSavings account can be opened via the financial institution’s app using a valid ID, making it accessible to first-time deposit customers.

The account also offers four free InstaPay transfers monthly through rebates, enabling users to send money, pay bills, or manage shared expenses digitally.

By removing the maintaining balance requirement, the Ty-led bank is positioning the product as a more flexible entry point into formal savings—one that adapts to fluctuating incomes and irregular budgeting patterns common among many Filipinos.

Customers who wish to grow their funds further may also opt into the bank’s Online Time Deposit (OTD) product through the bank’s app or online platform, offering an additional avenue for longer-term savings.

For now, the updated eSavings account is available to first-time Metrobank deposit clients, with onboarding fully digital through the bank’s mobile application. For more details, visit: https://www.metrobank.com.ph/personal/accounts/savings/esavings-
