Facade shot of UnionBank as the bank accelerates data-driven banking with AWS in major AI breakthrough

UnionBank accelerates data-driven banking with AWS in major AI breakthrough

Union Bank of the Philippines has rolled out Amazon Web Services’ (AWS) Amazon Quick Suite across its operations, marking a significant leap in its push to become one of ASEAN’s most data-driven and customer-centric banks.

The move positions UnionBank as the first in the Philippines — and among the earliest in the Southeast Asia region — to deploy the generative AI–powered analytics platform at scale.

The implementation allows more than 200 business users across operations, product development, technology, and customer-facing teams to query data through natural language, giving them the ability to generate insights and dashboards without relying on technical specialists. UnionBank expects this shift toward data democratization to eventually deliver three to five times faster turnaround for data requests, transforming how decisions are made across the organization.

AI-powered analytics to boost agility, customer experience

For years, UnionBank’s business units had depended on specialized data teams to build reports and extract insights — an industry norm that often slowed responsiveness in fast-moving markets.

By adopting Amazon Quick Suite, UnionBank is removing that bottleneck, empowering users to independently explore data, detect trends, and validate hypotheses in real time.

“Data is the foundation of any successful AI transformation in banking,” said Dennis D. Omila, Chief Transformation Officer of UnionBank. “By giving our teams direct access to analytics through natural language, we’re not just improving operational efficiency — we’re enabling smarter, faster decisions that help us serve customers better and stay ahead in a rapidly evolving financial landscape.”

The bank said the shift has already driven a 30% reduction in operating costs, particularly in campaigns and account management functions. Lower cost-to-operate translates to greater pricing flexibility and improved value for customers, UnionBank added.

AWS Philippines Country Manager Precious Lim said UnionBank’s deployment comes as AI adoption in the country accelerates at a year-on-year rate of around 50%, with financial institutions increasingly turning to generative and agentic AI to expand financial inclusion and personalize services.

“With Amazon Quick Suite, UnionBank is improving internal efficiency while setting the stage to deliver easier access to financial services and better customer experiences to millions of Filipinos,” Lim said.

UnionBank: Strengthening its lead in digital banking

UnionBank has long positioned itself as a trailblazer in digital transformation, from early cloud adoption to the launch of one of the country’s top-rated mobile banking apps.

Its latest move adds another milestone in its roadmap toward AI-enabled banking — one where insights are instant, decisions are data-driven, and teams across the bank can respond with greater agility to customer needs.
