Lazada highlights ESG progress in 2023 report

Lazada, the top e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia, has recently announced the results of its annual Ecological, Social, and Governance (ESG) impact report in 2023, which demonstrates its commitment to using e-commerce in initiating actions based on a genuine concern for others.

The report entitled “Enriching Lives, Emerging Stronger” highlights all the positives generated by the company in leveraging e-commerce as a force for good and is based on the four core pillars under its ESG framework — a future-ready workforce, empowering communities, environmental stewardship, and effective governance — which Lazada had introduced last year.

In the report, under the heading of “Future-Ready Workforce,” it was noted that Lazada provides a wide range of programs and benefits that are aimed at promoting the physical, mental, and emotional health of its employees.

Sellers may quickly learn and apply key ideas such as building brand awareness and operations at any business level through training programs like the Lazada University and the Lazada Masterclasses.

On the other hand, the “Empowering Communities” pillar supports approximately 1.1 million stakeholders in six Southeast Asian markets by offering the necessary services, infrastructure, and a plethora of new job possibilities. Micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) often see their businesses taking off in the digital world by forging alliances with well-known entrepreneurial groups, regional government agencies, and chambers of commerce — all thanks to the comprehensive support that these institutions provide to their seller-partners.

Under “Environmental Stewardship,” the report noted that Lazada’s overall greenhouse gas emissions have decreased by 10%, which is indicative of how the e-commerce company has prioritized reducing resource depletion and overall carbon footprint to lessen the environmental impact of its operations.

Finally under “Effective Governance,” it was also reported that Lazada has created a strong governance system that prioritizes ethical corporate conduct, protecting data privacy, and upholding intellectual property rights.

In all areas of its business throughout the reporting period, Lazada received ZERO or no substantiated complaints about violations of consumer privacy or losses of customer data.

Employees were actually reported to have been given free access to exercise programs at the recently established regional office in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig, in the Philippines, where open and bright rooms encourage an entrepreneurial spirit and team collaboration.

“For more than a decade, Lazada has been accelerating progress in Southeast Asia through commerce and technology. With our second ESG Impact Report, I am proud to share the progress that we have made and I am confident that we can achieve even more together,” said James Dong, chief executive officer of Lazada Group.

For his part, Carlos Barrera, the CEO of Lazada Philippines, said that ESG continues to be a significant component of the company’s identity. “Sustainability will continue to be central to all we do at Lazada,” he stressed.

“We are aware of how crucial this is to the success of the local digital economy and the promotion of the nation’s sustainable growth. We can continue to improve the lives of millions of Filipinos and contribute to the creation of a sustainable future by incorporating ESG into our operations and working with our partners,” Barrera added.
