AMD unleashes RDNA 4: Radeon RX 9000 series to ignite next-gen gaming with AI power

The gaming world just got a seismic jolt today as AMD (NASDAQ: AMD), a titan in the realm of high-performance computing, has officially unveiled its revolutionary RDNA 4 architecture, powering the highly anticipated Radeon RX 9000 series graphics cards.

This launch, spearheaded by the Radeon RX 9070 XT and RX 9070, promises to redefine enthusiast-level gaming experiences, fueled by cutting-edge AI advancements and revamped raytracing capabilities.

The unveiling was a multi-faceted event, radiating global excitement.

Collaborative spirit driving AMD’s innovation

A YouTube Premier, hosted by AMD luminaries David McAfee, Andrej Zdravkovic, and Andy Pomianowski, delved into the technical prowess and value proposition of the new series. Simultaneously, in Zhuhai, China, Jack Huynh, David Wang, and Lanzhi Wang led a regional showcase, highlighting the products’ significance in the burgeoning Asian market. A grand customer celebration, featuring key partners like ASUS, Gigabyte, and Sapphire, underscored the collaborative spirit driving AMD’s innovation.

“Today marks a pivotal moment,” declared David McAfee, CVP and GM of Ryzen CPU and Radeon Graphics at AMD. “The Radeon RX 9000 series, powered by RDNA 4, is not just about raw performance; it’s about delivering immersive, future-proof gaming experiences. We’re pushing the boundaries of what’s possible, blending advanced AI with unparalleled graphics fidelity.”

The RX 9000 series, boasting 16GB of GDDR6 memory, represents a leap forward in visual realism and computational power. The cornerstone of this achievement lies in the RDNA 4 architecture, featuring revamped raytracing accelerators and second-generation AI accelerators. These advancements translate to stunningly realistic lighting, shadows, and reflections, coupled with accelerated AI processing for both gaming and creative applications.

Gamers can anticipate a significant performance boost. The RX 9070 delivers over 20% more performance on average compared to the previous generation RX 7900 GRE at 1440p, while the RX 9070 XT surges ahead with a remarkable 40% increase. These cards are engineered to handle the most demanding titles, ensuring a fluid and visually captivating experience.

Key features that set the RX 9000 series apart

  • Unified RDNA 4 Compute Units: Up to 64 advanced compute units deliver a 40% performance uplift, setting a new standard for gaming prowess.
  • High-Performance Raytracing: Third-generation raytracing accelerators double the throughput, bringing cinematic realism to games.
  • Supercharged AI Acceleration: Second-generation AI accelerators, with up to 8x INT8 throughput, empower AI-driven applications and generative AI tasks.
  • AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 4 (FSR 4): A cutting-edge, ML-powered upscaling technology that delivers stunning visuals even at 4K with maximum raytracing.
  • HYPR-RX Suite: An integrated suite of features, including Radeon Super Resolution and Fluid Motion Frames 2.1, optimizing performance and responsiveness.
  • AI-Enhanced Adrenalin Edition: A new software suite offering AI-driven features like a Software Manager, AMD Chat, and an App Portal.
  • Next-Generation Display Support: The Radiance Display Engine supports DisplayPort 2.1a and HDMI 2.1b, enabling 8K 144Hz displays with HDR.
  • ML-Powered AMD FSR 4 Upgrade: A new feature that increases visual quality over FSR 3.1, improves temporal stability, and reduces ghosting.

The introduction of AMD FSR 4 is a game-changer.

This ML-accelerated upscaling algorithm, trained on AMD Instinct Accelerators, leverages the RDNA 4 architecture’s hardware-accelerated FP8 WMMA capabilities. This results in superior image quality and a substantial performance boost, supporting over 30 games at launch, with 75 planned for later in the year.

The RX 9000 series also marks a significant stride in display technology. The AMD Radiance Display Engine supports the latest DisplayPort 2.1a and HDMI 2.1b standards, paving the way for ultra-high resolutions and refresh rates, including 8K 144Hz.

With the Radeon RX 9070 XT priced at $599 and the RX 9070 at $549, AMD is poised to deliver exceptional value to gamers. These cards will be available from leading board partners starting March 6, 2025. Just recently, AMD also entered into a Transatlantic partnership with CEA to revolutionize the future of AI computing.

Meanwhile, AMD’s RDNA 4 architecture and the Radeon RX 9000 series represent a bold step into the future of gaming. By seamlessly integrating AI and advanced graphics technologies, AMD is not just delivering performance — they are crafting experiences that will redefine how we play and interact with digital worlds.
